Sadly, Bill couldn't have been more wrong.
Looking over the website and the results of the efforts the designer had made, I was not surprised that his website was not showing up whenever anyone looked for his service in the Sacramento area. First the website designer had done the entire website using a template I had seen many times before. The largest problem whenever anyone is using a site builder for their website design is restrictions. Not only was his web design freelancer unable to customize the website for Bill specifically, but the back end coding showed that, though he was able to put meta tags in the site, he was unable to put in a meta description, author tags, robot tags, or remove the "template design by" tag in the coding that helped the site builder gain ranking while Bill floundered a dozen pages deep in the search engines.
His images were another problem. His Sacramento web design "guru" had simply named all of his images by numbering them "Image 1, Image 2, etc." and missed out on getting Bill into any relevant image results. For his industry, people could often type in his most common keyword in images and see several pictures for examples of work in his industry. By not naming the images properly, his Sacramento web design person single handedly eliminated any chance Bill would have of people being able to find him by the work he had done.
Despite the other flaws in the website, easily the biggest nail in his Sacramento business's coffin was the complete lack of rich content on his website. As search engines pride themselves on giving the best user experience, a website that is not informative to the end user will generally rank poorly when up against websites that are rich in relevant information. In fact, in his entire website, Bill and his web design flunky had less relevant text about his Sacramento business than this one article does by the end of this sentence.
So Bill became infuriated, not at SIA and our Sacramento web design team, but at himself and the fact that he was taken in by someone who promised him a pie in the sky web design and served him up a fresh steaming cow pie buried in a forest. Though he knew what I was about to tell him, Bill had hoped that I would give him some hope that our Sacramento web design firm would be able to accomplish for him.
Sadly, before he could climb the mountain, Bill would have to dig himself out of the hole he was in first.
